Max Verstappen has confirmed that he held friendly and open discussions with Mercedes about a potential move in Formula 1, but insists that no formal deal was ever close and that he remains committed to his current team, Red Bull.

The four-time world champion openly acknowledged the conversations took place during the 2025 season when speculation about his future was rife amid Red Bull’s early struggles. Verstappen described the exchanges with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff as cordial and transparent, emphasizing that they did not progress into serious negotiations for a 2026 switch.

Despite the interest from Mercedes and public comments from rival teams fueling the transfer rumours, Verstappen stressed that his relationship with Red Bull remains strong. He referred to the team as a “second family” and explained that any decision about his future would involve much more than simply seeking a different car or environment.

In a BBC interview, Verstappen made it clear that while “there were discussions”, they were not indicative of a imminent move, adding that many personal and professional factors would have to align before considering a team change.

Although his current contract with Red Bull runs through 2028, the revelation is sure to reignite speculation about his long-term future and Mercedes’ ambitions under new regulations. For now, Verstappen appears focused on continuing his championship pursuits with Red Bull, dismissing talk of a Mercedes transfer as friendly but ultimately inconsequential.
